Part 83: Episode 4, Day 1, Investigation: Daddy Issues

We left off with...meeting Larry again.

Music: Happy People

What are you doing here!?

Sound: Whack

I sell Samurai Dogs! Want one?

(K-Kiyance...? Not another model, I hope...)

Oh, Kiyance's a fine, fine woman, Nick.

The ridiculous/happy people theme music once again picks a winner. This guy...

She bought this costume for me!

That... that's great, Larry.

Sound: Light Bulb

Whoa! Cute!
Sound: Stab 2

Sound: Drama Pound

Not my... what? N-no, she's not!

I'm, uh, the little sister.

Sister...?
Sound: Realization

...

Wow, Nick, must be tough.

N-no, I'm not Nick's sister, I'm my older sister's little sister...
Sound: Light Bulb

Huh. Sounds great!

(Don't worry, Maya, he's not listening...)

We're just bringing back every prior character, huh?

So, Larry, you run this thriving hot dog stand, huh?

I can't get over the Samurai Dogs...

The "Original" Samurai Dogs, no less.

Why don't you add "world-famous" to the sign?

Hey, good idea!
Sound: Light Bulb

(What have I done...?)

Hey, Nick, benches!
Sound: Light Bulb

I think not.

It's too cold to sit and eat hotdogs out here!

Wimpy city boy!

Hmmmm no thanks.

I guess we have to talk to Larry now.

Hey, Larry.

There was a murder here last night...

And since you work here... Have you heard anything?

Last night was Christmas Eve!

He was with Kiyance, obviously!

Music: Silence

Sound: Stab 2

?

Music: Happy People

I think what you just said caught him off guard, Maya.

Yup, he got ditched for Christmas.

She... she's in Hawaii on a photo shoot.

(A model. I knew it.)

Well, anyway, there was a murder here on the lake. The trial's tomorrow.

The defendant is Edgeworth. Miles Edgeworth.

Um, Nick?

Music: Silence

Whoa, Nick!
Sound: Objection

Larry knows him too!? This episode needs one of those tangled relationship charts.

Yeah. He's a murder suspect.

Wh-whoa! Murder?

Huh? You know Mr. Edgeworth, Larry?

Yeah! Of course!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Ah, we finally have the connection! Hmm, if Larry is also connected to Edgeworth, maybe Larry's the killer and framed him! Now that'd be a twist, our client from the first episode turning out to be the killer in the finale.

Whaaaaaaaaat!?
Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Happy People

Guess we'll have to follow up on that later.

Umm... umm... tell me about the dogs!

W-why are they Samurai Dogs?

I... I mean they kind of look gourd-shaped.

Ouch...
Sound: Light Bulb

She was all "change the name and you go girlfriend!"

She made me that banner!

Erm...

Oh, and guess what?

The "big news"...?

Yeah! Gourdy!

G-"Gourdy"...?

I refuse to maintain a single conversation thread.

So, Mr. Edgeworth was your classmate, Larry?

Yeah, Nick, him, and I used to hang out all the time.

Wow... I never knew.

Studying all the time, trying to "be like father."

Like his father...?

Aha, daddy issues confirmed!

Wow.

Wait...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Now that's great. Dad's a defense lawyer, so Edgeworth makes it his mission to absolutely eviscerate defense lawyers and get all their clients declared guilty. So many issues there.

Yeah.

Wait a second!

Sound: Realization

What? Edgey's got a proboscis on his knee!?

Sound: Whack

That's like the total opposite of a defense lawyer!

...

Huh. Go figure!

Are we talking about the same Edgeworth? You know what, here's the real reason we faced Winston Payne in the first episode. Larry would have blabbed all about this connection back then. And now Phoenix is doing the same job as Edgeworth's dad, serving as a constant reminder of whatever issues he still has, and ruining his unblemished record no less. No wonder he has weird interactions with us.

Man, he used to go on and on about man's duty to society and all that. What a bore!

I wonder what changed his mind, though?

Do you know, Nick?

...

Nick...?

Music: Happy People

Nick apparently isn't answering. In fact he was suspiciously quiet during that whole conversation. I think we have a better suspect now, though - the senior Edgeworth would be quite the dramatic villain here. Anyway, let's keep going.

Umm... what's "Gourdy"?

Huh? You mean you don't know?

Sound: Realization

A... monster?
Sound: Light Bulb

Yeah.

Wow! It's r-really real!

Music: Logic and Trick

Hmm...

Nick! A monster! A real monster!
Sound: Whack

Umm... yeah. (It's probably just a log or something... right?)

Hmm... What's this?

Another automatic camera?

Ah! That's why Lotta's camera is set up to respond to loud noises like that. She's trying to get a picture of Gourdy after all.

Sounds a lot like the murder we saw in the prologue, actually. But how would that be in yesterday's paper, if it happened last night? I have a theory half-formed here. Something about all the hints we've had so far is telling me we have some kind of timing mystery here. Like there were really two murders done in a nearly-identical way, or a real murder and a staged murder done the same way to mix up evidence from the two together. Maybe for an alibi or something. And Gourdy somehow plays into it? Is Gourdy a submarine periscope with a revolver attachment? :dumb:

Music: Happy People

(Why would there be a sound like an explosion...?)

Larry.

Could I borrow this article from you?

O-one million...?
Sound: Realization

(Grow up, Larry.)

Sound: Select Jingle

Now this evidence will be interesting to use somewhere. Maybe we use it to convince Lotta to fess up about why she's really here.

Hey, Larry, tell us about Gourdy again.

Hey Nick, show me that article once more.

Or we could just look at the article again ourselves, I guess.

"I heard a loud 'bang'! Like an explosion..."

How romantic!

Yeah. I'm just glad I'm selling more dogs!

We've finally gotten all the talking with Larry done, let's run through the evidence. We've actually got a decent list together already, but not a lot of concrete information between it all.

Dude, you really helped me out back in that trial.

S-sorry, I can't really pay you.

(Cause you blow it all on "Kiyance"...!)

R-really!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Larry...

If you let her at your dogs, you won't have any left for the other customers.

(How many times do I have to remind you that it was ME who got you off the hook!)

It was mostly Mia, really. But feeding Maya might save us more in the long run anyway.

Whazzat?

It's a camera. You take pictures with it.

L-Larry! You mean you don't know what a camera is!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Super Shock

I was talking about the weird contraption on that camera!

Oh, that.

Well... it's hard to explain. Just forget about it.

Good point, you're right.

Who's this?

I don't know. That's why I asked you.

Who's this, Maya?

Well...

quote:

If we hadn't gone back to our office to get Maya's revelation on the victim's identity yet, we get an additional line to remind us:

(Oh, wait. Maya said she had seen him before, didn't she...)

W-what's this?
Sound: Light Bulb

Actually, the photo's blurry, Larry.

It was taken last night.

Last night...?

Sorry, Nick.

I know that's just his generic "no reaction" reaction, but you just gave that to us, Larry.

We're done with Larry, let's see what's up at the police department.

Music: Silence

...

Not a Gumshoe in sight.

Sound: Light Bulb

Apparently, an important witness turned up.

He'll be in there a while.

Sound: Realization

Lotta! :argh:

Uh oh...

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

I'm mostly here to check in on this guy again.

That must be one of the detectives.

He's mumbling something to himself.

"Never enter the target's field of vision..."

...

He must be doing image training for tailing.

Music: Maya Fey ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme

I went back to chat with Maya again...

Sound: Whack

Whoa! O-okay! Let's go check things out.

She has a more generic reaction to the camera, now that we have the photo, but that's about it. She gives the same line for the photo and the newspaper article, too. I guess we should be in a bit more of a hurry. Next time I'll check in on Grossberg and see if he's actually there this time.
